What’s the difference between a username and a display name?

Updated: 19 September 2016

When you need a username

If you register when you’re under 13, we’ll ask you to create a username rather than enter your email address. You'll then use this username every time you sign in.

Your username will be private and won’t ever be shown publicly on any ÁùºÏ¿ª½±¼Ç¼ website or app.

When you need a display name

You’ll need to create a display name if you want to do anything public on a ÁùºÏ¿ª½±¼Ç¼ website or app. For example, if you post a picture or comment on a ÁùºÏ¿ª½±¼Ç¼ News story.

Your display name will be public. So don't use your real name, or any other information that could identify you, like your phone number, email address, street name or school name.

We’ll reject any display names we think are rude. If that happens to you, please choose something different.
